These self care activities are a part of my ‘fall into fall routine’, they have me ready for fall and even falling in love with all of the activities fall has to offer.

The calendar reminds me fall is fast approaching and, depending on where you live, the nip in the air signals the calendar is right on target. Here in Wisconsin, the weather seems to have dropped 20 degrees overnight and we got rid of the humidity. The cooler days bring with it some beautiful changes.

In addition to the cooler temperatures, fall brings with it shorter days and busier schedules. The kids are back to learning and fall drives to see the ever-changing colors of the trees, hayrides, and apple picking become weekend adventures. If you are not careful the holidays will soon be here.

Fall self care is all about getting cozy. Saying goodbye to your summer activities, welcoming the cooler weather and falling in love with fall.

The Importance of Self Care

I love summer!! Even with the humidity of Wisconsin, it’s my favorite time of the year. Well…..they really all are, just for different reasons. It’s hard to say goodbye to summer. I know that fall signals that the days will be getting shorter and colder which can leave us all feeling a little down.

With all of these changes taking place and busy schedules pulling us in different directions, we need to embrace those changes and reduce the stress they can bring on.

There is no better way to face those changes than with a few self care activities and pampering. Without focusing first on self-care and preparing ourselves for the coming changes, the stress of those changes and added responsibilities can cause us to become overwhelmed.

What Kind of Self Care do we Need?

Self-care is not something that happens just occasionally or when the seasons change. It is something that should be an ongoing part of our lives. The changing seasons signal that we need to change our self-care activities to help us focus on all of the positive things that the new season has to offer.

Self care is not just about pampering yourself, it’s about keeping your mind and body healthy and happy. These fall focused self care activities will help prepare both your mind and body for the changing season.

Add some fall decor to your home

Decorating helps me the most to prepare for the transition from summer to fall. Fall decorating does not have to be elaborate. Just switching out the pillow, and changing the pastel to more earth tones help you mentally prepare for the cooler temperatures and give your home that cozy fall feel.

Plus, anytime you give a room a new look it acts as a pick me up. I love searching Amazon for new fall arrivals, in addition, Homegoods and Target are a couple of my favorite places to find fall decor.

Buy a comfy sweater {or several}

My daughter is obsessed with fashion, but I think fall fashion is her favorite. The second it gets a little chilly she posts a sweater picture on Instagram. Not just any sweater but one of those cozy ones that look as if they are hugging you. Sweaters make fall extra special. This is one of her favorite sweaters.

Pumpkin Spice {everywhere}

Nothing says fall like pumpkin spice. One of the best things about fall has to be the food and the aroma. Pumpkin Spice is a favorite for so many. Pumpkin Spice scones, lattes, cupcakes, cookies, and more. The aroma just says fall! You can make your own pumpkin spice mixture with these simple spices.

Pumpkin Spice is a mixture of
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp ground ginger
3/4 tsp nutmeg
Mix this together and sprinkle it on anything your heart desires, cookies, pie, or even in coffee. Use your imagination!

Take a fall drive

Road trips have become the great American pastime. With those last remaining warm temperatures during the day and cold temperatures at night, the leaves are changing and the smell of fall is in the air. It’s a perfect time to hop in the car, relax and just enjoy the fall colors.

Add fall scented candles to your home

Fall scented candles are my weakness. As soon as the Bath and Body Works fall fragrances hit the store I stock up on their candles. I could burn them all year long, but that takes away from the enjoyment of that first fall candle being lit.

A great self care activity would be to treat yourself to some wonderful fragrances to fill your home with the warmth of fall!

Enjoy a home spa day

Spa days are so relaxing at any time of the year. Fall weather can have an impact on your otherwise healthy skin. Try facials with some of the seasonal fragrances.

Mix 2 Tablespoons honey with 1 teaspoon each cinnamon and nutmeg.
Mix the ingredients together into a paste.
Apply the mixture to your face, sit back close your eyes, and relax for 30 minutes.
Wash the mixture off with warm scrubbing in a circular motion.

The nutmeg and honey are natural anti-inflammatories that can reduce swelling and redness of your skin. The cinnamon works as an exfoliant when you rinse your mask off. Plus it wakes up our senses with that wonderful fall aroma.

Set boundaries

With kids back to learning and extracurricular activities going on it’s easy to stretch ourselves thin. There is an old saying, “if you want to get something done ask a busy person”.

Setting boundaries is not always easy, you need to decide how much running, activities, and volunteering you can do within your schedule and stick to that decision.

By setting boundaries and sticking with it you are setting yourself up for a less hectic fall.

Baking always gets me in the fall mood. In the summer we use the grill a lot and try to not use the oven. With the temperatures getting cooler it’s okay and even recommended that you get the oven going. Not only does it keep the kitchen toasty warm but it also makes the house smell so good.

Whether it be pumpkin pie, applesauce cake, or chocolate chip cookies let the aroma of fresh-baked treats get you in the fall mood.

De-clutter

Fall and spring are my de-clutter times of the year. I love to de-clutter! Getting rid of those things that take up space in my home excites me and gives me energy. Not to mention it frees up space for new things!

Enjoy a warm drink

What is it about hot spiced apple cider that just makes one feel all warm and cozy? Who doesn’t love the smell of warm apples and cinnamon? Our local coffee shop has the best spiced apple cider. I love to sit in the corner wrapped up in a sweater sipping my apple cider or any other fall drink. It’s fun to relax and watch the people coming into the coffee shop.

Create a fall bucket list

Creating a fall bucket list is exciting. There are so many fun fall activities around. We enjoy making a list and seeing if we can complete the list before the first snowflake falls.

Enjoy the last of the warm weather

With the weather getting cooler many of us instantly head indoors. I encourage you to not do that. If where you live is anything like Wisconsin, you will be indoors before you know it. Put on those jeans, cute leggings, and a cozy sweater and head outdoors to enjoy all the nice days left.

Spring, summer, or fall there is no bad time for a campfire. There is something totally relaxing about the campfire. In the fall I love to just curl up outside with my cozy blanket or that special someone and just watch the flames. For an added bonus grab those S’mores fixings and enjoy.

Curling up under a blanket is one of my favorite self care activities ~ it’s self care at it’s finest. It’s cozy, comforting, and like giving yourself a big hug. That is if you can get the blanket.

Make your favorite fall comfort food

Comfort food needs to be on everyone’s list for self care no matter what time of the year it is. You know the food I’m talking about, those recipes that you remember grandma making when you were little. I personally think just the smell of some of those foods creates feelings of comfort. What is your favorite recipe that you remember from childhood?

Put together your new fall look

It’s time to either put away or give away those summer clothes. Remember decluttering is good. There are so many amazing fall looks. Have a little fun going through your closet and putting combinations together and then head out to do just a little shopping getting those extra little touches that will help give you a new fall look.

Head on out to a local park and walk around enjoying all of the amazing fall colors and scenery. Take your camera with you to capture some of that beauty. The bright and vibrant colors of fall make for some great pictures. If you are feeling really adventurous grab your sweetie, your favorite pet, or even the kids and photograph them enjoying the day with you.

I love the look of a fall manicure. One of the gals from work has beautiful nails and I always admire them. They always made it feel more festive seeing her new manicures during the seasons.

Even if a manicure is not part of your normal routine, the start of each season is a great time for a little self care by treating yourself to a seasonal manicure.

Make a gratitude list

Every year I like to look back at all of the amazing things that I have to be thankful for. I like to end the year focusing on all of the positive and not the things that I wish had been different. It’s amazing when I start writing them down how long my gratitude list can become.

By writing out your gratitude list it will help you reflect on all of the positive. This is a great idea for the fall but is a wonderful daily activity for your gratitude journal.

Visit the farmer’s market

Fall is known as harvest time. It’s fun to hit the farmer’s market in the summer but, the fall brings a new element with the later crops being available.

I love strolling and look for those perfect gourds and pumpkins for decorating. Looking for the perfect pumpkin to turn into a jack-o’lantern is an adventure. I like to grab a few so I have some for decorating and an extra to practice turning into my jack-o’lantern. I’m never sure if I’m going to carve mine with tools or paint them.

Take a Sunday nap

This one was really hard for me at first. I was so used to the house being filled with kids and me having to put all of my energy into them. There was no extra time just for me.

I’m starting to not feel guilty when I just need a quick pick me up nap. Even that 10 minutes feels great. Gary never hesitates to join me for a Sunday power nap, usually he gets there before me.

Indulge in a Sunday nap, by yourself or cuddles up with that special someone as part of your self care fall activities.

New fall routine

Embrace the change. With the nights getting shorter, I found that rather than trying to force my routine to stay the same I adjust to the sun. I find myself turning in earlier in the evening and getting up a little earlier.

As hard as this is to think about, now is the time to start shopping. By starting when fall hits, you will get some great bargains, plus set yourself up for a lot less stress going into the holiday season.

By the end of August, my daughter already has many of her gifts purchased for her nieces and nephews. I was a bit jealous because I had not even thought about shopping yet,

Buy indoor plants

Filling your home with plants is a often overlooked self care activities. I don’t have a green thumb but my daughter does. Just going to the greenhouse with her makes me smile.

Plants are a good thing to have in your home during the winter when it is all buttoned uptight. Plants remove carbon dioxide from the air. They make me feel happy seeing them in the house. For ease of care, succulents are great, I’m finding they are pretty much indestructible. You can even purchase live succulents on Amazon.

Take a Fall Walk

As the weather gets cooler I love to get outside as much as I can, enjoying every last minute before the snow and cold hits. Walking has become one of my favorite activities. Fall just adds energy to your walk. Being able to get out and enjoy the fresh air and the cool breeze is energizing.


Whatever your self care activities for fall are, keep in mind you deserve them! You are doing them for you. Self care is not just about pampering yourself, it’s about keeping your mind and body healthy and happy, which is good for everyone around you.

There are just so many amazing self care activities that you can embrace that are sure to make you fall in love with fall. These are just a few that I find myself doing each year.

  7. I’m a counselor so I love all self-care lists and ideas! I’m definitely going to add a fall drive to my self care routine, so perfect for our COVID times. I’m also a big fan of fall cooking so you can bet I’ll be bringing out that slow cooker. The food cooking just smells so comforting!
