This Savannah to Charleston road trip has a very romantic starting point. You should spend a few days in Savannah before heading to Charleston, SC.

While in Savannah, visit the historic center and see attractions like Forsyth Park, enjoy a riverboat cruise, visit the statue of the waving girl, take a horse and buggy ride, or take a haunted ghost tour.

After leaving Savannah, you will want to take your first little detour and head east on U.S. Route 80 until you reach Tybee Island. This barrier island is home to beautiful beaches, fascinating wildlife, and rich maritime history.

On Tybee Island, stroll on the beach and climb the Tybee Island Lighthouse, Georgia’s tallest and oldest lighthouse. The lighthouse museum adds to the visit. If you have gotten an early start, we suggest you grab some coffee and watch the sunrise on the beach.

If you are a history buff, you may want to check out the Fort Pulaski National Monument on the neighboring Cockspur Island during your stop on Tybee Island.

There is so much to see and do on any road trip from Savannah to Charleston. With only 100 miles between the two destinations, you can fit a lot in just one day of travel.

We personally enjoyed slowing down and enjoying as much as possible along the way. We also broke up our trip and spent the night in Beaufort, SC. We would recommend that if it fits your schedule.

In addition to staying partway between Savannah and Charleston, if you have additional time you may want to add any of these stops to your road trip. Each of these adds a different element of romance and Southern charm.

Old Sheldon Church Ruins – This is located in Yemassee, South Carolina. These historic ruins offer a glimpse into the past.
